The Best Movies Never Made

Bill Skarsgaard as Pennywise in the final film

After three years of development and a few weeks before production was due to start on Warner Bros’ IT adaptation, then-director Cary Joji Fukunaga dropped out, citing “creative differences”. Fukunaga’s version of the movie would have been very different from Andy Muschietti’s. For starters, Will Poulter was set to play Pennywise in Fukunaga’s version. His script also carried a much darker tone, with gorey, violent flashbacks illustrating Pennywise’s reign of tyranny throughout the years and much more explicit depictions of racism and sexual assault. In one draft of his script, Fukunaga even made the character of Stan a goldfish, possibly to reduce the number of main characters.
