Sofia Coppola spent a few years developing her adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid. She originally wanted to make it a “very dark fairy tale movie” with Maya Hawke in the lead role. However, the studio wanted something more accessible with a more established star, which led to Chloe Grace Moretz getting cast instead. Ultimately, Coppola and the studio couldn’t agree on a tone and she departed the project.
