Before Luca Guadagnino decided to direct the project himself, Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green was set to remake Dario Argento’s Suspiria back in 2008 with Natalie Portman in the lead role of Susie Bannion. Gordon Green described his version of the project as a “pretty hardcore”, “very expensive” and “operatic” movie that would’ve taken place in an all-girls boarding school. Isabelle Huppert and Janet McTeer were also set to co-star. The project was cancelled due to concerns with the film’s budget.
