Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin was hired to write and direct the third Alien movie. Wanting to avoid repeating the same formula used in the first 2 movies, he came up with several different ideas for the film, including an origin story for the aliens that would’ve seen Ripley traveling to their planet. Another idea was to have the aliens invade earth, a pitch that was rejected because the execs thought that “no one would want to see it”. Despite that, an early teaser for Alien 3 showcased his second pitch for the movie, touting the possibility of aliens making their way to earth.
